This past Sunday the Pirates faced-off against the Zombies for the Western
Division Championship. As you may recall, we lost last season's Finals to
Team Micro, and everyone was confident this would not be a repeat of that
game.
The Pirates started-off with a full contingent of eleven skaters, and an
army of Jimmy Ferraro's relatives in the stands to cheer us on. The Pirates
got on the board quickly with a blast from Russ Nicolosi less just :30 seconds
into the game which was eerily similar to how last season's Championship
game began.
The Pirates would hold that 1-0 lead until midway through the 2nd period,
when the Zombies were able to tie it up on a powerplay off a deflection.
That would be the only tally of the 2nd period and with the score now tied
1-1, The Cup would go to whatever team won the final 15:00 minutes.
In the opening moments of the 3rd period, the Zombies would gain the lead
as a loose puck danced around in Harris' crease (surrounded by a bevy of
Pirates), before finally coming to rest in the net. Late in the period,
the Zombies would drive the final nail in the coffin as they scored on breakaway,
giving them a 3-1 lead with less than 5:00 minutes remaining. An emptynetter
would close out the game and the season.
