Our final game before the "new format" 2-game playoffs, gave us
a chance to finish the season with our best regular-season record in franchise
history. A 1-2-3 pass play (worthy of SportsCenter!) from Russ to Scooby
to Dan DiPierro in front gave us the 1-0 lead and that was the only score
in the first two periods.
A diving Russ saved a bouncing puck from falling into our net in the 2nd,
and tough play by Scooby and Scott Lematty on the offensive boards kept
the Sabre "D" hustling all night. Finally, in the 3rd, Glenn Farkas
broke down center ice and slapped a fast, low shot by Downey (the big guy
on D) and John Arena (who was one of three non-Sabres who bulked-up
their diminished roster). That insurance goal gave us a boost since we were
having trouble converting other scoring chances. A couple of close calls
towards the end with an extra Sabre skater (one of them saved by Russ again
with seconds left), but we held tight for the win. We finish the season
with a 5-1-2 record.
