With the new playoff structure (which no one can really decipher) we are
seeded first in our bracket and we faced the winner of Saturday night's
Rage/Jags B game. The Rage won that game handily (3-0) and got first crack
at trying to take us down.
They got on the board in the first :50 seconds off a slapshot that deflected
off one of our defensemen and that 1-0 score held all the way into the 2nd
period. Jimmy Ferraro finally put us on the board when he rifled a shot
high, glove-side to beat John Arena. Not too long after, some great work
in front by the the Ferraro-Ralz-LeMatty line produced our second goal (a
feed from Russ behind the net to Tim just above the crease).
Although action was end-to-end, the real story was defense as our forwards
were coming back and breaking up fast breaks, and Roger and Dan (once he
got his footing!) were keeping control at the blueline. Glenn Farkas continued
to out-hustle everyone around the boards and creating a lot of chances.
A Rage penalty (for taking down forward Scott LeMatty) put us on the powerplay
at the 5:00-minute remaining mark, but they still produced a few shorthanded
opportunities. With 3:00 minutes to go The Rage switched to total
offense mode, but a bunch of face-off wins down low (kudos to Scooby)
kept them in check and some smart puckhandling nullified their extra-skater
advantage as we ran out the clock ... and, we're going to the Finals!
