On a high from the 'unveiling' of our Championship patches on our jerseys
(made possible by Chris going to the printer and picking them up for us
right before the game!), we might not have been ready for the Phantoms coming
at us with so much offense. We took care of many of their attacks at the
blueline (Glen Chambers blocked a great shot and Roger put his body on the
line a couple of times too). We generated a lot of offense towards the end
of the period with Chris, Glen and Scott feeding the slots and owning the
boards). Still the first goal came with just over a minute remaining, when
one of their defenseman had a low slapper through a screen from the point.
The Phantoms took the 1-0 lead into the first break.
The second period was more of the same, but a faceoff in our zone proved
deadly when they got it to their point (that same huge defenseman who got
their first tally) and he blasted a shot top corner for the
2-0 lead. We took it up a notch up later that period during an unbelievable
offensive burst around their crease. Brian Newcomb got the credit for the
goal although we had about 4 guys right there digging away and helping
out.
The 3rd period began as a 1-goal game, and although our 'D' wouldn't allow
the Phantoms to get inside (Big Jim Crowley & Dave Matthews led the
way), they did find the net again on another long, low shot. Fortunately
our offense was tenacious and Russ scored on a delayed penalty call (when
they pulled down BB) on a feed from Brian Newcomb. With 1:20 remaining and
a 3-2 game, we put the extra skater on the ice and BB scored on a scramble
after the face-off in their zone. Unbelievable!
