The Rage always give us a tough time during the regular season (two ties
last season), and last night was no different. Although we clearly dominated
and controlled the puck early on, the Rage (thanks to acrobatic saves by
John Arena) kept it scoreless through most of the 1st. With only 1:30 remaining
in the period, Scooby picked-up a rebound by the crease and lifted his shot
top-shelf unfortunately some quick thinking by the Rage pulled the
net off and Scooby was awarded a penalty shot. On the penalty shot, Scooby
again forced Arena down to the ice, but couldn't lift the puck over him
and the score stayed 0-0 (they called the period after that shot and 90
seconds was added to the clock for the 2nd).
Right off the opening face-off in the 2nd, however, we got our goal; Scooby
won it cleanly back to Chriswho fed Russ for his first goal of the new season,
and the 1-0 lead. DanDiPierro would add another goal when he intercepted
a Rage clearing passalong the boards, giving us the 2-0 lead. Awesome defense
by our trio ofRoger, Dave and Russ made sure the Rage couldn't touch that
lead and wecarried that score into the break.
About 4:00 minutes into the 3rd, the Rageturned-up the pressure and managed
to deke our otherwise infallible defenseand then beat me high, glove-side
with a shot that banged off the top post.Sustained pressure followed on
the next face-off, but the momentum againswung our way after Wildman unintentionally
"ran" their goalie and most oftheir defensive line. We got our
2-goal lead back (Jimmy scoring with the assist to Chris), and then Scooby
would get a goal late in the 3rd by banging in a Scott LeMatty shot that
lay exposed in front of the goal.
