SUNDAYS #3 vs. BLIZZARD:

(vol. 5S, no. 3; newsletter by h.s.)
After a 2-week layoff (which felt more like two months due to the stifling heat inside the rink), we were hoping to defend our perfect season. We were doing this with a shortened bench (we were without Dan Pomphrey, Dan DiPierro, and Jimmy). On the opening rush, Tim dug a puck off the boards and fed Roger at the point for a perfect one-timer to give us the quick 1-0 lead at the 14:40 mark (pretty damn fast!). The Blizzard kept digging though, and worked the boards late in 1st and centered a pass for a goal that evened things up 1-1.

During the 2nd, the Blizzard took advantage of a turnover deep in our zone and blasted one high, stickside for the 2-1 lead. We had a close call when Ralz pulled their goalie out of position but we narrowly missed an open net (by this time their goalie was looking a little wiped and he took off his jersey and spent much of his “down time”actually down on the ground on his knees catching his breath). Russ did his coast-to-coast move to tie things up at 2-2 again, but after a controversial face-off (there guy pulled our net off intentionally, but no penalty was
called and the faceoff was just outside our zone instead of down at their end), the Blizzard got the puck to an open man for the goal and the 3-2 lead which closed out the 2nd.

During the 3rd it stayed gridlocked (although Wildman, Scott, Scooby and Chris supplied great pressure up front), until Russ worked some more magic to get us a goal with just over a minute left. With1:00 remaining we had a faceoff deep in our zone and the Blizzard called a timeout to regroup. The Blizzard won the faceoff and fed their point and — yes, this is the painful part — they blasted a shot high for what would be the gamewinner. We put the extra skater on, but they added an emptynetter to take the game. Kudos: Dave, who made a great clear on a rebound when I was down (and he had a couple of blocked shots too); thumbs up: to our penalty kill, but thumbs down to our powerplay

LOST 5-3
