Our final game before the playoffs was a rematch against the Phantoms (we
lost 4-2 previously). We were playing with a 2-man bench, but it was the
Phantoms (looking for the breakout pass?) who were continually icing the
puck.
After a scoreless first period, the Phantoms got on the board at 14:30 of
the 2nd with a bizarre angle shot that bounced off my skate (to quote Brian
Newcomb who was standing next to me, "How in the hell did that go in?!").
Fortunately on the following play, Scott Miller dug the puck from behind
the Phantoms' net and lasered a pass to Chris who one-timed it beautifully
to tie it up. That 1-1 score would hold for the remainder of the period.
In the 3rd period, Russ did one of his coast-to-coast moves with 7:30 remaining
to give us the 2-1 lead. The Phantoms called a timeout to regroup, and they
did immediately as they were able to swarm our zone and put in a third rebound
to tie things up with about 4:30 left. It looked like that's how the game
would end until Russ somehow banked one off their goalie with only :30 left.
Although things looked like a done deal, the fat lady did not sing quite
yet ... After our timeout the Phantoms won the last faceoff and with
:17 remaining a bouncing puck found a Phantom, who slapped one high,
blocker-side to tie it up once again. Kudos to Scott for his second consecutive
Wednesday scoring title. His 11 points is a new Pirate record (narrowly
passing Russ' 10-point mark). Also, kudos to Roger his two penalties
last night gave him the all-time Pirate Penalty minute record.
