The two-time defending Champion Coastal Pirates welcomed the Newest expansion team to the league by handing them a 5-4 loss. The Bottom Feeders managed to keep the game close even though the Pirates — debuting their new white alternate jersey — controlled the game from the start. Once again the Pirates sported a full 10-man roster.
Although the game was chippy right from the start (as the Pirates were hacked and hit on every opportunity), the refs were not giving away many powerplays. Our Goal-A-Game or “GAG” man, Russ, would get things going with our first goal on a pass from #67. The Feeders answered right back to tie things up 1-1, but Evan Miller (assist to brother Scott) put us back in the lead. Mike Farrell added a powerplay goal to widen the Pirate lead to 3-1, but before the period was over the Feeders struck again and the Men In Black, er, White were only able to take a one-goal lead into the break.
No sooner did the puck drop on the opening faceoff of the final period then Jimmy (on a pass from Craig) drove up the ice to give the Pirates back their two-goal lead, 4-2. The contest continued to go back-and-forth during the final 22:00 minutes and the Bottom Feeders managed to keep the game close. Craig ended-up tallying the GWG (assist to #67) and in the end the Pirates prevailed — thus beginning an unbeaten streak in their “whites.”
