WEDNESDAYS #2 vs. GERIATRICS:

(vol. 33W, no. 2; newsletter by h.s.)
For the second time in as many nights the Coastal Pirates played an overtime game. As opposed to the five-man crew from the previous evening however, for this Monday night outing we had significantly more manpower. In fact, the Pirates had a wealth of riches on defense — so many that Gucci and Kevin alternated playing forward. Starting on offense #67 centered the Miller Bros., while the never-before-seen trio of Gucci-LeMatty-Matthews formed the second line. On defense, Mike, Kevin, and Craig Grinberg rotated to start.

The 1st period was a back-and-forth battle. Scott Miller gave the Pirates the 1-0 lead, only to have it knotted-up on a successful breakaway by Rapp. We then took a short break while Brooks (who was reffing) did a Nascar-style pit crew fix on my skate after a bolt broke. When we resumed, Gucci (assist LeMatty) made it 2-1, but again the Gerrys answered back on the next shift to tie it up 2-2 at the break.

The final period was more of the same as no team could get better than a one-goal margin on the other. First, Kevin (assist Grinberg) gave the Pirates back the 3-2 lead, but the Gerrys again tied it the next shift out. LeMatty made it 4-3 at the 7:00-minute mark, but again the Gerry's answered on the next face-off. Then, with only 5:00 minutes remaining, the Gerrys executed a nice one-timer to take their first lead of the night 5-4. With time evaporating, the Pirates won a defensive zone face-off and — with the cries of Craig Grinberg yelling “Get the puck to Kevin!” — Kevin skated up ice and sent the game into overtime.

During the 3:00-minute overtime, I finally managed to stop one of Seth's shots (the one that matter most though!), before Evan became the overtime hero (assists brother Scott and #67). The victory extended the Pirate overtime winning streak to three and gave the Wednesday team their first “W” of the young season.
