37W, no. 7; newsletter by b.n.)
If there ever a game that was a must win, it was last Wednesday. The Coastal Pirates had been hovering around the basement in the “A” division all season (5th place with only Playoff spots for the top four teams). Sure we've played pretty good all year, but it never seem to translate into wins. So, as I mentioned, there was a game last Wednesday and the Coastal Pirates found themselves opposing the only “A” team that they had beaten all season — the Bruins. And, based on the 5-2 score from that outing, we must have taken it to them. (I could go back and re-read the old newsletter, but who has time to do that).
Anyway, the Pirates, riding their longest winning streak of the season (one game) seemed to be oozing confidence as they stepped on to the rink. Add to that, the fact KennyG scored moments off the opening face-off, and it looked like you had the makings of a rout. The Bruins, however, did not see it that way. They settled down after the goal and eventually scored one themselves. But the Pirates climbed back into the lead when one of the Pirate “D” picked-up a loose puck in front of Harris and pushed it to KennyG, who fed Marty, who skated down the rink and scored. The Bruins, as you might have guessed, answered back. And that was just the 1st period.
The final period was more of a defensive battle. I don't clearly remember any of Harris' saves, but I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, that was a great save!” As it turns out, that is how the period would end. Onto overtime ...
For those that are fans of history, Gucci pulled one out of the archives as he picked up a rebound off a blocker save from Harris and went end-to-end — deking and juking the whole way — before burying the game winner just :55 seconds into overtime.
