For this newsletter I'm going to write about the game before us, since that game determined the value of ours. You see the new Wednesday League structure has only the top eight of twelve teams making the Playoffs — and we were number nine going into this game. That meant the Big Slick, who was playing the 10th-seeded Jags, needed only one point (a win or a tie) to claim the final Playoff spot.
When I came into the rink, with about 3:00-minutes remaining in the 1st period of the Big Slick-Jags game, the Slick was winning 4-2. In other words, our game was over 25:00 minutes before it began. One of the Slick players told me that one of their goals bounced-in off the goalie's back and another went in off a Jag player, but that doesn't really matter on the scoresheet. At the start of the final period the Jags scored off the opening face-off to make it a 1-goal game and their was a ray of hope for our post-game chances. And then the Jags got a powerplay ... but then the Big Slick score shorthanded, and that was all she wrote.
As for the Pirate game? Since the Gerry's only had “six” players (or eight, depending if you count the everyone playing for them that night), Scott Baldwin let them recruit ref Dave Kurasz — who promptly scored two goals in this consolation game. The only other highlight worth mentioning was Jason brought Dos Equis to the post-game “meeting” to keep consecutive game “beer-bringing streak” alive at eight games.
