42S, no. 1; newsletter by h.s.)
This was the beginning of our “All-Cannibals Week” as we faced them both Sunday and Wednesday ... and were handed back-to-back loses. Both games ended with two-goal deficits; both games had different Pirate netminders; and both games had an abundance of subs, as three-to-four regular-rostered Pirates were out on each night.
We played a tight 1st period and only surrendered one-goal, coming at 18:30 off a defensive-zone face-off (Neither Joe, Eddie or I know how that one managed to bounce in.) Fortunately, Scott LeMatty
answered right back for us on the next shift to knot things up at 1-1. We brought that score into the break.
We came out gunning, but strong goaltending by the Cannibals kept it deadlocked at 1-1. Then the Cannibals wore us down by scoring three consecutive times beginning at about the 10:00-minute mark: First a long shot found the twine, followed by a backhander past several diving Pirates, and lastly a bobbing-and-weaving move through slot. It just seemed like we were out of gas.
Facing a 3-goal deficit with about 90-seconds I decided we may as well get the extra skater on; ironically, as I was halfway off the ice the Cannibals got called for a penalty. Our extra skater immediately jumped-on and without losing possesion, Glenn put in his first of the season and made the game slightly more respectable.
