WEDNESDAYS #1 vs. CRUNCH:

(vol. 5W, no. 1; newsletter by h.s.)
Our first game of the new season turned out to be a battle of the “special teams.” There were five powerplay opportunites, including three Pirate powerplays and a 5-on-3 advantage for the Crunch in the 3rd. Ironically, the only goal of the game was a shorthanded one by the Crunch at the 10:30 mark in the final period. Up till that point the action was back-and-forth, but it was on the tail-end of our powerplay that the Crunch (featuring some new snipers in their lineup) broke down ice and somehow managed a 2-on-0 break; the first shot was blocked, but they tucked in the rebound for what would be the GWG.

We had a bunch of opportunities after that (including a couple of breakaways and a few brief open nets with a sprawling John Arena), but we couldn't finish. With :25 seconds left we put on the extra skater and threatened, but couldn't get the tying goal.
