STRANGE BUT TRUE
Interesting tidbits of Pirate lore
Aug. 3, 2005: The only All-Star game ever played at GoodSports featured three Pirate forwards on the Western squad: Chris Goione, Craig Sudol, and Evan Miller. Ironcially, the Eastern Conference goalie took ill and Harris substituted in net — where he faced his own Pirate teammates! To make things more bizarre, the East ended-up winning in a shootout.

Jan. 25, 2006:
A game against the Jaguars went into overtime and ended in a 0-0 tie — the only scoreless tie in Pirate history!

Jan. 31, 2007: At the 17:35-mark of the final period vs. the Geriatrics, the Pirates scored their tenth goal to win 10-2 — the fastest “Mercy” in Pirate history.

June 18-19, 2007: During a Semifinals game vs. Jaguars, the Pirates “Mercy” them at the 13:47-mark of the final period — the only recorded “Mercy” in Pirate Playoff history. The following night, the Lumberjacks “Mercy” the Pirates at virtually the same time in their game.

December 19, 2007: The Pirates scored two shorthanded goals (E. Miller & B. Newcomb) on the same powerplay against the Red Stars to take a 2-0 lead. More amazingly, #67 tallied the first one unassisted in :00 seconds during the kill — because the scorekeeper never started the clock.

April 6, 13 & 20, 2008: Defenseman Joe Lyden scores the opening goals in three consecutive Sunday night games. In his fourth attempt (on April 27), the goalie snags his backhander to end his streak. He nets his first Pirate hattrick later that night.

June 29-July 20, 2008: During a span of six Sunday and Wednesday games, the Pirates did not surrender a goal. They outscored opponents 29-0 and logged 224:32-minutes of shutout hockey. The streak included 5 shutouts and 1 forfeit with more than 162:00-minutes (7 periods plus) starting out the Summer Sunday season.

Summer 2008 — Perfection: The Wednesday Pirates were a 8-0 during the regular season and won the Championship, completing an undefeated 10-game run. During the streak, the Pirates compiled three shutouts (one in the Finals) and one “mercy” (in the Semifinals). Ironically the previous Wednesday season the team didn't even make the Playoffs!

July 31, 2013: Ryan Nicolosi, son of the celebrated Captain Russ, scores his first goal as a Pirate. Known as “Coach” for his decade of unfailing attendance behind the bench, the Wall native assumes the spot of Right Wing and nets his debut score in a 3-3 tie. In the tradition of the Howe family, Ryan became one of the first “second generation Pirates” in Franchise history.

RETIRED NUMBERS
Currently only two number have been retired by the Coastal Pirates
#22: Stephen Zack, co-founder of the Coastal Pirates franchise, had his number retired in the Spring of 1997. Steve, or “Little Stevie” as he was fondly known, didn't lead the team in any scoring or plus/minus categories, but he had the distinction of being a “tenacious defensiveman” who had more penalties committed upon himself than any other Pirate ever. In 1998, Zack returned to the ice at Eatontown for a final hurrah, but after he was viciously checked his wife insisted he retire permanently. Since that time, no other Pirate has skated with the legendary “22” on their back.

#28*: Ed “Scooby” Southworth retired following the Summer 2003 season, ending his 9-year run in Pirate black. Scooby was one of the three members of the Stavola Construction team that would become the core of the Coastal Pirates during their inaugural season in 1996. His defensive style has been called “fearless” due to his disregard for his own personal safety while blocking shots, and the fact that he played without benefit of a facemask or shield during his tenure. His effortless coast-to-coast skating abilities and his rowdy locker room antics will be missed. During his nearly decade-long run, Scooby collected 4 Championship rings, 2 Lady Byngs (Sportsmanship), 1 Hart (Season MVP) and 1 Norris (Defense) Trophy, along with 24+ Silver Skulls.
*Scooby made a comeback in 2004 and his number is once-again active.
