Although the Pirates were victorious over the Coyotes, this was not as good an effort as the score indicates. To prove this point just look at the score sheet — four goals but only one assist. We did enough to win however, and we'll have a chance to redeem our play next week when we face the same opponent for the final game of the regular season. The Pirates did skate with a full roster as Keith, Kevin, Joe and Wildman manned the blueline; up front was Scott LeMatty, Glenn, Russ, Ralz, Dan DiPierro and Nick. The Coyotes, however, were not as fortunate: they had only one sub and no goalie — that is until Brooks left his scorekeeper duties to don the pads for them.
The opposition scored on their first shot on goal. A breakaway. It would not be until twenty minutes later mark that the Pirates would wake up when Kevin netted his first of the evening on a feed from Glenn. Heading into the turn it was 1-1.
The second frame is where the Pirates would pour it on. In any event Kevin, Russ and Joe would all score in rapid succession beginning at the 15:00-minute mark to blow things open. Russ scored directly off an offensive zone faceoff that resulted because the captain of the Coyotes absolutely leveled his own defenseman at the blueline. Play was stopped to pick up all the stray equipment which flew from impact and Russ' quick tally would follow. Unfortunately for the defenseman this would prove to be the least painful event of his evening; with about 4:00 minutes to go Kevin went full tilt down the left side and wound up. The very same Coyote that had since recovered from the aforementioned collision was sideways when Kevin unleashed his patented slapper. The shot nailed him on his foot and for the second time he fell to the ground and play stopped. The Pirates maintained the three-goal lead down to the final minute when an errant clearing attempt behind our net was picked-up by #11 of the Coyotes and backhanded top corner (he scored both of their markers — something to keep in mind next Sunday).
Just a remainder that the Wednesday Pirates skate for the Championship this week. There are plenty of good seats available. Till next time ...
