WEDNESDAYS #9 vs. BOTTOM FEEDERS:

(vol. 40W, no. 9; newsletter b.n.)
It was fairly obvious at the outset of the game last week that the refs didn't read the previous Wednesday's newsletter. Well actually it wasn't that obvious at the outset. It actually looked like the refs were against us (as usual) — especially after LeMatty was slashed, hooked and then dragged down on a breakaway. But before the Pirates could get their collective panties in a wad, # 67 took the ensuing faceoff and split the defense on another breakaway and (you guessed it) he got hooked and dragged down. The only difference on this play was that Dave Kurasz blew the whistle. And then, something bizarre happened ... the Pirates were the beneficiaries of what seemed like five or six consecutive powerplays. Even more bizarre was that there seemed to be a never ending 5-on-3. But for whatever reason, when all was said and done, the Pirates were only able to score one powerplay goal in the waning seconds of the final man advantage. After the 1st period the Pirates found themselves leading 2-1 on goals by Nicolosi and Miller.

The Bottom Feeders took the momentum in the final period however, scoring three consecutive times to gain the lead 4-2. With less than 4:00 minutes remaining, the Pirates were able to battle back on goals by Gucci and Nicolosi and push the game into overtime ... but it ended just moments in when the Bottom Feeders scored to end the Pirates post-season run.
